12/20/06 -- The "Under the Wire Buck" and "Norman"

Gary and "Norman" came out on the last day of the '06 muzzleloader season to help find the "under the wire buck." Norman did a great job staying on the blood line straight to the buck and also for handling Gary (the one with the short ears). Norman's a young pup still -- but he knows what he's doing, his purpose in life and unlike most other dogs he's got a job to do -- he's a true working dog.

Norman's a 13 month old Basset Hound. He's been on 9 sorties so far this year -- helping hunters to locate their deer and with one black bear sortie under his collar. He's off to a great start for such a young hunter. I should mention that many of DSI's members use Wirehaired Dachshunds while others use several other breeds that work. The dogs are not permitted to run free while on a sortie. They must be kept under control while tracking the wounded deer or bear -- a 25 foot lead is used for this purpose.

Also pictured in the attached photos are buddies Dennis and Jeff Reistad of the Town of Newburgh. Dennis is V.P. of Black Rock Fish and Game Club of Cornwall and Jeff has his own business "Relax and Call Jeff" in the Town of Newburgh.

Gary Kulisek is a licensed NYS tracker (NYSDEC Lic. # 52 and is a member of Deer Search Inc. (DSI) of  Pleasant Valley, NY. There's also a Western NY and Finger Lakes Chapter.

DSI has been tracking wounded deer and bear for NYS hunters since the early 80's and they are responsible for having legislation passed so others could apply for a license to track wounded big game in NYS. A few other states are following in DSI's tracks. One doesn't have to be a member of DSI in order to apply and test for the tracking license. Members and their dogs volunteer to help hunters find deer and bear when all else fails. More on Gary and Norman later on my Website

The "under the wire buck" was taken about 10 minutes before the close of the Catskill Muzzle-Loader season -- that was Tuesday 11/19/06.
For those who are interested the hunting implement was a Thompson Center Thunderhawk (.50 cal. inline Muzzleloader, 21" sst barrel with a Hornady 300 grn. sabot and two 50 grn.Triple 7 pellets) at approx. 70 yds.

Thanks to Dennis and Jeff for their support.

This was by far the most unusual hunting season in memory for me -- more on that at another time.

And I hope you've got plenty of venison or other game meat in your freezer to be enjoyed throughout the year.

All of the best to all for a great holiday season and hoping for lasting peace in the New Year.

A job well done by volunteers Gary and Norman -- with a smile, shake of hand and tail and lick of the face.
